5 Moving Tips You Absolutely Need

Moving time! (I am singing that in the same tone as the song Closing Time by Semisonic, so I hope you do too.)

Anyways, raise your hand if you like to move and all the work that goes into it…. oh wait, no raised their hand because moving is a B***H. It’s exhausting, expensive, and really just a pain, but luckily for you I have some tips on how to make it easier because well I made it as hard as possible which means I know all the things not to do.

For those of you who don’t know, I recently moved over 1,500 miles across the country for the simple desire to experience life.

Also, for a little back story, I really had never moved before this so I was clueless and completely unprepared. I lived in the same place for 5 years prior to moving and when I moved into that apartment I didn’t have many things, yet so I didn’t have a true perception of how difficult it would be to move.

  1. Be Prepared- No seriously, be prepared before moving day. I was not prepared to move when I was planned to move and it was super stressful. I wasn’t fully packed until right when we left so a few boxes weren’t as organized as I would’ve liked.

  2. Purge- One thing, I did do that I recommend to anyone moving is purge. “If you don’t love it, leave it”. I applied that saying to everything. I got rid of over half of my apartment because it’s really not necessary to take things you don’t use or only kind of like to a new spot with a new vibe. I felt like my old apartment had bad vibes. It really needed saged from all of the energies that had previously been in that space.

  3. Label- I only about halfway accomplished this because of my lack of preparation, but label your boxes with what is in them and where they go so that when you move into your new place it is super easy to put everything away.

  4. Call Around for the Best Rental Truck Deals- If you’re moving across the country and do not plan on hiring across country movers, make sure you call moving truck companies don’t just book it only. I used Penske (which PS they give FREE mileage), and saved a ton by calling instead of just booking it online. I ended up saving over $500 because I called and asked questions about discounts available and extra days which I also got for free.

  5. Hire Movers- I learned this the hard way. My dad and I loaded my entire apartment because I am a control freak and didn’t want my breakables broken with cross country movers or pods. What I didn’t think about was just hiring movers to load the truck (DUH!). I did; however, hire moves when I arrived in Florida and it was no big deal. They had everything done in an hour and it was worth every penny. I definitely micromanaged to ensure my things were taken care of, but I made sure to tip, and provided drinks and snacks.

If you’re moving soon, happy moving!
