Feature Friday - Meet Denton!
Hey guys! I’m Denton. I’ve been a friend of Madison’s for a few years; we met working together back in our serving days. This girl is a rock star, I’m very thankful to be her friend and to have had the opportunity to watch her grow and achieve her goals. She’s been one of my number one motivators since we met and I’m excited to see where we go!
Anyway, a little about me; I’m originally from Pueblo, Colorado, I’m 25 and as of a few days ago I’m a Certified Public Accountant (woo!). When Madison asked me if I wanted to feature on her blog, I was slightly hesitant because I wasn’t sure what content I could bring. I slept on it, and decided I wanted to give y’all some of the best advice and speak from experience on what I’ve learned the past few months.
As I mentioned above, I’m originally from Pueblo, Colorado but for the past nine months I’ve been living in San Diego, California. It took me quite some time to figure out if this move was what I really wanted to do and I was hoping I could give someone else the confidence to switch their life up a little bit.
San Diego wasn’t the first move I’ve made away from my family and friends. I moved to Seattle for my first year of undergrad, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would and decided to move back to Colorado, but to Denver. Denver is an incredible city and I’ve met quite a few amazing people there while staying close to the ones that I loved. Deep down I always knew that I would eventually try and move to a new city and experience more of what this world has to offer, but after my first out of state attempt I was a slightly terrified. So here’s what I’ve learned: there will never be a better time than right now. There’s always going to be something that will hold you back or something you should wait for but if you decide to wait, most likely you’ll wait forever.
I realized, the number one thing that I was most scared of (and most other people are too) is doing it alone. So my number one tip is convince someone else to move with you! Having at least one person out there with you takes away so much of the anxiety. You don’t have to hang out with that person all of the time, but when you need someone they are there. Second, remember that you can always move back. My goal is at least a year but yours can be shorter if that makes you more comfortable. Your friends and family will always be back home and no one is going to judge you for taking a chance and then realizing that it wasn’t right for you.
Now once you make the move, the fun begins. This means figuring out what to do with all of your time! I try and workout at least 5 times a week at OrangeTheory and I’ve found that it helps relieve stress and anxiety, but it also gives you the opportunity to meet new people. I moved out here hoping to meet a lot of new people and experience new things. It isn’t always easy talking to random people and trying to find new friends, but it does get easier the more that you do it! One of the easiest ways to meet new friends is through work. Finding a job that allows you to meet new people is key. I’ve had a few friends that have moved places but ended up working from home and they struggle to connect with people. Having hobbies helps too, my roommate and I go to a lot of concerts. I’ve moved to a city where there is always something to do, the beach is down the street, there’s plenty of restaurants and bars around, and it’s one of the top destinations in the United States so people are everywhere!
Every day isn’t going to be great but most of the days are going to be, and I encourage you to take a chance and experience something new if you have been considering it. My motto in life is “get comfortable with being uncomfortable” and I hope you do because it’ll change your life. Good luck!
